NSU Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidential Inauguration

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University will honor one of the great leaders of the Civil Rights Movement and commemorate the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States during festivities in Tahlequah and Broken Arrow.

The commemoration begins with the Civil Rights Movement and The Man Behind the Movement displays will remain available in the University Center through Jan. 23. The Northeastern Student Government Association and the Association of Black Collegians coordinated the displays.

The NSU Multi-Cultural Student Coalition on the Broken Arrow Campus will take part in the 25th Annual MLK Jr. Commemorative Parade in Tulsa on Monday, Jan. 19. Anyone interested in representing NSU at the parade, themed Capturing the Dream: United We Stand, Divided We Fall, may contact the Office of Student Affairs at the Broken Arrow campus at 918-449-6140.

In honor of the National Day of Community Service on Monday, Jan. 19, NSU will also host Volunteer Day with Habitat for Humanity on the Tahlequah campus. Coordinated by Student Affairs Volunteer Services Center and NSU Campus Compact VISTA Volunteer, community members can volunteer to work on a Habitat for Humanity housing project between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. that day. Volunteers can sign up in Student Activities in the University Center or the Office of Student Affairs in the University Center by Friday, Jan. 16.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, NSU will host Presidential Look at Leadership, a leadership conference for high school students from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the NET Building and University Center. The conference is being coordinated by the Patrick Vaughn of the Presidents Leadership Class.

A campus-wide broadcast of President-Elect Obamas inauguration will begin at 10 a.m. The Presidential Inauguration Day Luncheon will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the University Center Sen. Herb Rozell Ballroom. The event is free for students, and $8 for faculty and staff. Tickets are available in the Student Activities Office and the Office of Student Affairs.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Candle Light Vigil Walk will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Garrison Memorial Fountain next to the University Center. The route will include three stops to listen to speakers share excerpts from speeches given by Martin Luther King, Jr. A PBS documentary on Martin Luther King, Jr. will also be shown on television in the Cafeteria and Food Court in the University Center.

Various members of the campus ministries are coordinating a National Prayer Service on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Watch www.nsuok.edu for further updates.

The Black Heritage Committee will host Diversity Rocks at 5:30 p.m. in the University Center. The program will include guest speaker Rev. Scott Gordon, singer Sydonna Anderson, and a performance by Kindred Spirit.
