Graduate Courses in Reading Now Available at NSUBA

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University continues to answer the call for well-prepared teachers of reading for any classroom. Now many of the required courses for the Master of Education in Reading can be taken at Northeasterns newest campus, Broken Arrow. A 32+ hour program (plus capstone experience), the Master of Education in Reading degree facilitates classroom teachers in-depth understanding of the reading process and their knowledge of how children learn to read and write.

Timing is Right. According to Oklahoma Department of Education official, Dr. Carol Lindgreen, the state of Oklahoma is in dire need of reading specialists. In addition, teachers are seeking effective ways of instruction, curriculum development, and assessment skills to aid them in their everyday instruction and to assist them while their role as educators continue to change.

The role of the reading specialist is changing, said Dr. Karen Gunter, chair of the Reading Masters Program. In addition to their preparation as classroom teachers, reading teachers and reading specialists, graduates from Northeasterns Master of Education in Reading program are prepared to serve as key resources for literacy assessment and as a school site-based collaborative consultant to colleagues, parents, and other professionals.

Fulfilling the Need. The program is designed to meet all of the International Reading Associations (IRA) competencies for classroom teachers, reading teachers, reading consultants, and reading supervisors. Both the IRA competencies and the Oklahoma State Objectives for Reading

Specialists are embedded within the coursework of this program. Students may elect to take the state certification test in reading upon completion of their masters degree. NSUs Master of Education in Reading program is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association and the National Council Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE).

NSUBA Offers summer courses for Masters in Education in Reading Program. Individuals can complete six required reading hours toward their Masters of Education in Reading this summer at the NSU-Broken Arrow campus. NSUBA summer session runs from June 9 through July 31, 2003 for the following reading courses: READ 5223, Intermediate Middle/High
School Reading is available Monday and Wednesday from 9 to 11:40 a.m. and READ 5113 Emergent/Early Literacy Development is available Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:10 p.m.

Additional courses for this program are also offered at the NSU-Muskogee campus. The Muskogee campus currently houses the NSU Reading Center, a K-12 reading program that focuses on improving reading, writing, and study skills.
