Northeastern Alumni Association Announces Board Changes
TAHLEQUAH The Northeastern State University Alumni Association announces several changes to its board. Serving as avid supporters of the University, each board member plays an integral part in promoting the growth and mission of the Alumni Association.
On behalf of the Northeastern State University Alumni Association, I would like to welcome our new members and extend a very special welcome to our returning board members," said Lisa Turner, director of Alumni Relations. I look forward to working with this great group of volunteers as we strive to serve Northeasterns alumni and keep them informed and involved with their alma mater.
NSU Alumni Association President. Serving as the new president for the Alumni Association is Mike Martin of Muskogee. A Northeastern student from 1965 to 1967, Martin majored in pre-engineering and went on to attain his professional degree in architecture. He is the owner of an architecture firm that specializes in a variety of educational projects for Oklahoma public schools and colleges. Included in Martins design projects are the buildings of the NSU-Muskogee campus, including the new Mike Synar Center for Technology.
Martin joins President-Elect Tim Foutch, Vice President Dr. Denise Roddy, Past President Dr. Jim Gore, and Lisa Turner on the NSU Alumni Association Board of Directors.
New NSU Alumni Association Board Members. Ebony Johnson (Tulsa), Michelle Naylor (Tahlequah), and Todd Mutzig (Tahlequah) were elected as the Associations newest board members and will each serve a three-year term.
A former Miss Black Oklahoma, Johnson is a member of the NSU Hall of Fame. While attending Northeastern, Johnson served as president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and was a member of the Kindred Spirits Gospel Choir. The Language Arts chairperson and a teacher for Monroe Middle School, she recently received the Monroe Middle School Teacher of the Year award. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Language Arts in 1999 and a Master of Education in School Administration in 2001.
An involved member of the Tahlequah community, Naylor serves as chair-elect and promotion chair for the Tahlequah Main Street Board of Directors and is co-chair of the Taste of Tahlequah event. A co-owner of Main Street Coney Island in Tahlequah, Naylor earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1995 and a Master of Business Administration in 1997.
A 1991 graduate, Mutzig holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. He and his wife Paula are owners of Meigs Jewelry in Tahlequah. The chair of the Tahlequah Main Street Board of Directors, Mutzig is also a member of the Jewelers Association Board of Directors. Mutzig is an active supporter of Northeasterns Homecoming celebrations each year assisting the University with the Emerald Giveaway at the Emerald Ball.
Re-elected NSU Alumni Association Board Members. Mary Battenfield (Tulsa) and Lillian Jayne (Muskogee) have each been re-elected and will serve an additional three-year term.
A 1960 graduate, Battenfield holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. While at NSU, she was a cheerleader, served as vice president of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and was named Phi Sigma Epsilon Sweetheart. After teaching school for eight years, Battenfield became a stay-at-home mom and property manager for 32 years. She is an active community member and volunteers for many community services in the Tulsa area.
A 1994 recipient of the NSU Citation of Merit Award, Jayne taught for the Muskogee Public School system for 25 years. She currently has her own business in conjunction with RE/MAX of Muskogee. Jayne earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1970 and a Master of Education in 1988.
Recent Appointment to NSU Alumni Association Board. Clarice Turney (Tahlequah) was appointed to serve a one-year term and fills a recent vacancy.
A key volunteer NSU for many years, Turney and her husband Maurice have been strong supporters of the Alumni Association, NSU Foundation, and NSU athletics. The couple also supports the Sequoyah Institute, the Tahlequah Chamber of Commerce, and First Baptist Church. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Oklahoma State University.
Current NSU Alumni Association Board members include Senator Glenn Coffee, Ron Evans, Janet Flores, Kathy Hewitt, Esther King, Dr. Justin Lindsey, Clarice Turney, Diane Walker, and Jared Webster.
Promoting the interests and welfare of Northeastern State
University, the NSU Alumni Association represents the lifelong commitment
and support of its alumni and friends. The Association promotes positive
interactions between the University and its alumni through a variety of
activities, events, services, and communication. All graduates, former
students, and others interested in Northeastern are eligible for membership
in the NSU Alumni Association. The Association currently serves more than
3,000 members.
