NSU to Offer Students

NSU to Offer Students & Families Two Opportunities to Learn About Ways to Pay for College

TAHLEQUAH - This February, students and their parents can have personal, professional assistance in learning about financial aid and planning for college thanks to two upcoming events - Cash for College and College Goal Sunday.

Cash for College will be televised live at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, on OETA (Tulsa - Channel 11, OKC - Channel 13). Experts will be in the studio to discuss the various aspects of financial aid. Viewers will be able to call toll-free and ask questions of student financial aid counselors from various Oklahoma colleges, universities, technology centers and professional schools.

During the one-hour telecast, discussions will include information on types of financial aid available, how to apply for financial aid, how to avoid common mistakes when filling out the financial aid application and much more. Also, Cash for College will be broadcast live via the Internet. To watch the live-streaming webcast, viewers may go to www.okhighered.org/student-center.

The following Sunday, Feb. 9, students and their families can attend College Goal Sunday and visit with financial aid counselors and college staff in person from 2-4 p.m., at Northeastern State Universitys Tahlequah campus in the University Center Ball Room (second floor) and on the Broken Arrow campus in Building A in the Visitors Center Gallery (first floor).

In a single afternoon, students and their families can become familiar with college entrance requirements, learn about planning for college, and obtain on-site assistance in filling out financial aid application forms. (Those interested in this service should bring their latest tax information to the event.) In addition, valuable information will be shared about the benefits of attending college, student support services, areas of study, and different degree programs.

We realize the financial aid process can be an intimidating one for many people considering higher education options. College Goal Sunday provides a wonderful forum for potential students and financial aid professionals to discuss questions, concerns and opportunities surrounding the financial aid process, said NSU President Larry Williams. Northeastern State Universitys goal is to help people realize how affordable college can be. And, with the various financial aid opportunities available to students at NSU, there is absolutely no reason why a student who would like to attend, could not attend.

For more information about either event, contact Scott Medlin, NSU director of Student Financial Services at 918-456-5511, ext. 3410.

More than 30 higher education institutions are participating in College Goal Sunday. For a complete listing of participating colleges and universities, go to www.okhighered.org and click on College Goal Sunday or call 1-800-858-1840.

Cash for College is being produced by OETA in conjunction with the Oklahoma Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA), Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program (OGSLP) and the State Regents with additional funding provided by Bank One, Oklahoma College Savings Plan, OSLA Student Loan Servicing, Sallie Mae Fund, Stillwater National Bank, Bank of Oklahoma, Local Oklahoma Bank, Nelnet Educational Services, Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, Affordian Student Loans, Armstrong Bank, Arvest Bank, BancFirst, Bank of America, Citibank-The Student Loan Corporation, First National Bank of Oklahoma, Nellie Mae and Tinker Federal Credit Union.

College Goal Sunday is sponsored in part by Lumina Foundation for Education; Oklahoma GEAR UP; OGSLP; Oklahoma Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators; Sonic, America's Drive-In; and the State Regents.
The College Goal Sunday program was created by the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association with funding from Lilly Endowment, Inc., and with supplemental support from Lumina Foundation for Education.

Helping Oklahomans find the resources necessary to make attending college more affordable is a priority for the State Regents, Chancellor Paul Risser said. We applaud all of the Oklahoma businesses and organizations, along with the Lumina Foundation, who have made these two events possible and who understand the value of a highly educated citizenry. Their generous contributions will have a positive impact on our state for years to come.
