Problem-Solving Is Focus of New NSU Environmental Science Program

TAHLEQUAH Students interested in the sciences have a new program option available at Northeastern State University. NSU's Environmental Science program focuses on environmental problem-solving and encourages students to think about the links between science, institutional analysis, theoretical understanding, and the economics and culture of daily life. The Environmental Science bachelor's degree is available with a choice of one of three emphases: biology, chemistry, or geosciences.

NSU's Environmental Science program allows students involved in biology, chemistry, and particularly geology a little more variety, said Dr. Craig Clifford, NSU dean of Math, Science & Nursing. The degree's firm foundation opens the door to a wide range of opportunity for its graduates.

Graduates from the program are prepared for opportunities in public, private, and nonprofit sectors, with salaries and growth opportunities as diverse as the types of environmental jobs. They will also be qualified to pursue graduate studies in environmental science or to seek employment in private environmental consulting, nonprofit environmental action, hazardous waste management, state and federal resource management, or environmental law.

According to the Department of Commerce, an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 companies, organizations, and governmental agencies have employees with environmental science training, while a decade ago, only a handful of those positions existed.
