50th Year of NCATE Accreditation
Published: 2004-10-29
In 1954, Northeastern State University became a founding member of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Now, 50 years later, NCATE has become the premier accrediting agency for education professionals in the United States, currently accrediting 575 colleges of education including Northeastern.
This spring, in addition to renewing Northeasterns accreditation, NCATE officials commended the university because it cited no official areas for improvement relative to any of the standards.
NCATE-accredited colleges of education produce more than two-thirds of the nations new teachers every year. Thirty-nine states have adopted or adapted NCATE standards for their own state accreditation systems.
The NCATE accreditation system is based upon periodic inspection visits. The last visit to NSU was in March 2004. The next visit is scheduled for fall 2010.
