NSU 2007-2008 Academic Calendar Provides Study Days

Published: 2007-02-07

TAHLEQUAH - An adjusted academic calendar at Northeastern State University will provide a better start for incoming freshmen and more study opportunities before finals week.

"We have modified the academic calendar to meet student requests and improve retention," said NSU President Dr. Larry Williams, in announcing changes that will begin in the 2007-2008 academic year. "The addition of two study days per semester has required that classes begin three days earlier than in previous years."

Through the Northeastern Student Government Association, students officially requested that the administration consider adding two study days to each semester. As a result, classes will not be held on Thursday and Friday before finals week so that students will have the opportunity to better prepare for final exams. This will enhance study opportunities and allow students to meet with their professors or in study groups to prepare for semester-end exams.

In addition, students will have the chance to broaden the scope of their participation in state and federal holidays during the 2007-2008 school year. In fall semester, NSU will close on Friday, Nov. 16, to commemorate Oklahoma's Centennial Day, a one-time holiday that will be recognized by all state agencies. During spring semester, classes will not be held on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. University offices will remain open on that date and faculty will maintain regular office hours.

"Students will have the opportunity to participate in a number of on-campus activities celebrating the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. or they may choose to participate in activities in their hometown or surrounding communities," said Williams.

According to the updated 2007-2008 academic calendar, fall semester classes are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 15, with the semester ending Friday, Dec. 14, and commencement set for Saturday, Dec. 15. The spring 2008 semester begins Wednesday, Jan. 9, with finals week ending on Friday, May 9, and commencement to follow on Saturday, May 10.

Freshman Connections, a first-year orientation program that helps improve student retention, will be held Monday, Aug. 13, and Tuesday, Aug. 14. All freshmen will start together on those days and earn credit required for College Strategies.
