NSU to Host 35th Annual Symposium on the American Indian

TAHLEQUAH The Northeastern State University Indian Heritage Committee will host the 35th Annual Symposium on the American Indian April 18-21, 2007, with a powwow honoring NSU alumnus Archie Mason, Osage/Cherokee, on April 20-21.

This years theme, Oklahoma 1907-2007: And Still the Waters Run, inspired by Angie Debos book title, is a reflection of a phrase often repeated in the testimonials of Indian activists at the turn of the century as Indian Territory was in transition to Oklahoma statehood.

Keynote speakers include Indian law expert Rennard Strickland, award winning actor Wes Studi, and native language expert Akira Yamamoto. Other featured events include a Cherokee language forum, student research, live theater, music performances, traditional games, arts exhibitions, and the 2007 American Indian Symposium Film Series. Distinguished lecturers will speak on topic such as land allotment, language revitalization, traditional medicine and cultural continuity.
