Baker, Henshaw Participate in Centennial Book signing

OKLAHOMA CITY Northeastern State University Professors Terri M. Baker and Connie Oliver Henshaw participated in a Centennial booksigning event on Nov. 2 in Oklahoma City at the Barnes & Noble at May and Memorial near Quail Springs Mall.

Their book Women Who Pioneered Oklahoma, Stories from the WPA Narratives resulted from research conducted in the Oklahoma Indian Pioneer Papers. The original collection of the 1930s interviews is held by the Oklahoma Historical Society and the University of Oklahoma and exists in microfilm owned by NSUs John Vaughan Library, where Baker and Henshaw did their research.

Oklahomas Secretary of State M. Susan Savage wrote the foreword to their book, which say that their stores are both compelling and inspirational and first female chief of the Cherokee Nation Wilma Mankiller noted, These are rare and important narratives.

In October, as part of the Oklahoma Centennial, Baker and Henshaw appeared at author events in Muskogee, Tulsa, and Tahlequah. In November, they plan to travel to Durant to participate in an author event at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and present a program in the pubic schools about Women Who Pioneered Oklahoma. They are also scheduled to appear and sign copies of their book at the NSU Bookstore on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Baker chairs the department of Languages and Literature in the College of Liberal Arts at NSU. Henshaw is an instructor and the English Education Specialist in the department of Languages and Literature in the College of Liberal Arts.
