NSU Jazz Ambassadors Jam-Balaya In October

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University Jazz Studies announces the kickoff to the 2007-08 Green Country Jazz Series with the Third Annual NSU Jazz Ambassadors Jam-balaya on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 6:30 p.m. Cajun food, a silent auction and live performances from NSU jazz groups have become a staple for the now annual event. This years event also features one of the stars of the New York jazz scene: Saxophonist Eric Person.

Person, who studied at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene for over 20 years, and has over 30 recordings to his credit. Person was a regular member of the Dave Holland quintet in the early 1990s, and has toured and recorded with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Holland, McCoy Tyner, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and the World Saxophone Quartet. Person leads his own band, the hard-swinging group Meta-Four. Their recordings are critically acclaimed by the leading publications in jazz, notably Downbeat magazine and allaboutjazz.com. Person is kicking off his U.S. tour with Meta-Four in support of their new CD, Rhythm Edge, with a solo appearance at the NSU Jazz Lab.

Eric Person is a monster saxophonist, a great songwriter, and an outstanding performer, said Arthur White, NSU director of Jazz Studies. NSU Jazz is certainly excited to perform with this potent artist. We are thrilled that he chose Jam-balaya to kick-start his tour.

Person will perform with NSU faculty and students, and will premiere two brand new big band arrangements by White with the award-winning NSU Jazz Ensemble. The band is celebrating the release of the new CD, The Point, recorded with superstar guitarist Henry Johnson.

Local artists, businesses and civic groups have donated services and items for the popular silent auction. All proceeds go to benefit the NSU Jazz Studies program, which promotes jazz performance and education throughout the region, and promotes the cultural and popular arts scene in Tahlequah.

Jam-balaya has really blossomed into a great event, and with the addition of wonderful guest artists such as Eric Person, the evening becomes even more special, said White.
