TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University Professor Dr. Joan E. Bell was named the 2007 Oklahoma-Arkansas Mathematical Association of America Distinguished Teacher of the Year at the 69th annual meeting of the organization held last week in Tahlequah.

"I am thrilled and just speechless to have received such an honor, said Bell, professor of Mathematics". I am grateful to the many distinguished teachers I have known, my own teachers, my colleagues and especially my husband, Larry, who have and continue to share their teaching skills with me.

The award was announced at a dinner during the two-day event, hosted by the NSU math department. Mathematics professors and teachers from across Oklahoma and Arkansas attended the meeting to discuss math and math education topics.

"We were delighted to host this event for only the second time in the universitys history", said Dr. John Diamantopoulos, first vice chair of the Oklahoma-Arkansas Section and NSU associate professor of mathematics.

The Mathematical Association of America is an organization dedicated to promoting the interests of mathematics. It is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. MAA members include university, college and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business and industry.
