Northeastern to Host Mathematical Association

Published: 2007-03-26

TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University will host the 69th Annual Meeting of the Oklahoma-Arkansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America on March 30-31 in the University Center on the Tahlequah campus.

"Northeastern is welcoming members of MAA from across Oklahoma and Arkansas to this two-day event to discuss math and math education topics," said Dr. John Diamantopoulos, first vice chair of the Oklahoma-Arkansas Section and NSU associate professor of mathematics.

The meeting will consist of a number of workshops, speeches and presentations from university professors and several undergraduate students. Dr. Wendell Wyatt, NSU assistant professor of mathematics, will present the student workshop "Stellated Octahedron Easier Said Than Done," while Dr. Julia Sawyer, NSU associate professor of mathematics, will present the faculty workshop "Confessions of a Data Nerd: Issues in Sharing Statistics with Undergraduates."

Wyatt will also present the talk "Generalizing the Rational Number Equivalent of any Repeating Decimal."

Featured speakers include Dr. Steven Dunbar, director of the American Mathematics Competition and professor of mathematics at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, who will present the Invited Address, and Dr. David W. Henderson, of Cornell University, who is presenting the N.A. Court Lecture.

The Mathematical Association of America is an organization dedicated to promoting the interests of mathematics. It is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. MAA members include university, college and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business and industry.

This is only the second time that Northeastern has hosted an annual regional meeting of the MAA, the first being in 1967.
