TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University will receive a nearly $600,000 federal education grant to support scholarships for students studying mathematics and computer sciences.
The Financial Support for Talented Undergraduates in Mathematics and Computer Science Grant from the National Science Foundation will provide scholarship to low-income rural students.
This funding will give many Oklahoma students, who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity, a chance to receive a college education, said U.S. Congressman Dan Boren. This is an important tool we can give students to prepare for a good job and a bright future.
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science plans to use the funds for 26 students majoring in mathematics or computer science at NSU. Candidates for the scholarships will have a proven track record of academic excellence and demonstrate a financial need. Special emphasis will be made to recruit women, American Indians and students from underrepresented groups in these disciplines.
NSU will begin awarding the scholarships for the Fall 2008 semester.
