TAHLEQUAH The color purple will hold special significance to the students at Northeastern State University. Members of the Virginia-based Military Order of Purple Heart Service Foundation met with local representatives and University officials to present the NSU Foundation with a $120,000 gift on Wednesday, August 25. The donation will be used to establish a scholarship endowment for qualified military veterans and their spouses.
"Northeastern was a natural choice for this scholarship," said Richard Gallant, director of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation. "In addition to its colorful history and Native American involvement, Northeastern is one of Oklahoma's fastest growing universities."
Northeastern joins a select group of 30 colleges and universities across the nation in offering the MOPH scholarship.
"This is a great day for the University, our servicemen, and the students of Northeastern," said Dr. Larry Williams, NSU president. "In addition to the service and freedom the men and women of the Military Order of the Purple Heart have fought to give their countrymen, their continued contributions through such scholarship endowments ensure a brighter future for the next generation. For this, Northeastern and its students are truly grateful."
The Military Order of Purple Heart Scholarship at Northeastern is available to any honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces, the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and the U.S. Coast Guard and their spouses (regardless of race, color, creed, or economic status). Priority will be given to recipients of the Purple Heart Medal and/or their spouse. Individuals must meet NSU entrance requirements. A Department of Defense Form 214, or AGO Form 35, must be presented to confirm eligibility. For the 2004-2005 academic year, up to $7,500 in scholarships will be distributed to deserving NSU students.
