TAHLEQUAH - Returning to college to finish a degree can be a huge challenge for adults with jobs, families, and other obligations. Northeastern State University is leading the way in making that process easier though Reach Higher - Oklahoma's Degree Completion Program.
"For the past year, Northeastern has worked in conjunction with other universities across the state to provide adults an opportunity to earn their degrees by establishing Reach Higher," said NSU President Dr. Larry Williams. "In our fast-paced world, having a college degree can help you create better job opportunities, develop life skills, or fulfill your educational goals."
Launching in March, Reach Higher will provide an opportunity for more than 69,000 Oklahomans who have attended college to earn their degree at campuses across the state. By building on college credit already earned and providing a flexible eight-week schedule, adults can earn a Bachelor of Science degree in organizational leadership in two years.
"Business and education leaders from across Oklahoma created the degree program so you know you are part of a quality program that covers topics and skills that are important in today's workforce," said Dr. Tim McElroy, Reach Higher director and dean of NSU-Muskogee. "You'll learn from curriculum that thousands of other Oklahomans already have studied, and you'll be proud to say your degree comes from NSU."
Since Oklahoma's public universities offer Reach Higher, tuition is affordable and financial aid is available.
To enroll in Reach Higher, students must have already earned 72 college credit hours, be 21 years of age and not enrolled as a full-time student for at least one year, have a minimum of 2.0 GPA in past college course work, completed general education requirements as defined by the home institution admitting the student, and satisfy all institutional requirements for completion of remedial coursework.
The Reach Higher curriculum is approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
NSU will offer two initial courses beginning in March, Foundations of Organizational Leadership and Professional Communications. Foundations of Organizational Leadership provides an introduction to the program through a variety of topics, including time management techniques, study and test-taking skills, and principles of adult learning. Professional Communications is a study of communication in the workplace within a framework of organizational ethics. Additional courses will be offered as the program progresses.
