TAHLEQUAH Northeastern State University Vice President for Administration Kim Cherry was appointed by the board of the Regional University System of Oklahoma to serve as acting president of NSU effective Saturday, April 14.
Cherry will continue in her capacity as vice president for Administration while also assuming the official duties of NSU President Dr. Larry Williams, who is recovering from a heart attack suffered at his home on March 2.
Doctors report that Williams is progressing well in his recovery at a Tulsa hospital, but have not released a date when the president would be able to return to Northeastern.
"Besides attending to the day to day operations, this is a critical time in the business cycle of a university and the Regents want to make sure that NSU has a voice in the budget process," said Mark Stansberry, RUSO chairman.
Cherry will serve on the President's Council of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education during the critical budget process and act as the institution's leader at other events and meetings
The President's Council is comprised of chief administrators from Oklahoma's 25 public colleges and universities. The council plays an integral part in the budgetary process for the state's institutions of higher learning.
In her position as vice president for Administration, Cherry oversees Northeastern's budget process, as well as supervising many of the services offered on the University's three campuses.
Cherry received her bachelor of arts in Sociology from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1977 and in 1980 completed her bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. Cherry began her career at Northeastern in 1989 and was promoted to vice president in January 2004
