Mahan Selected to Present at Conference

BROKEN ARROW Melissa Mahan, associate dean of Student Affairs at Northeastern State University Broken Arrow was recently selected as a presenter at the 2008 American College Personnel Association Annual Convention on March 29-30, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mahan will discuss impact and success of the Diverse Educational Leadership Training Academy (DELTA) on the Broken Arrow campus. DELTA is a training ground for future leaders and helps students build relationships while finding opportunities to be of service.

DELTA is the training ground for students who wish to explore personal leadership, said Mahan. Many businesses today are looking for individuals who show personal initiative that stems from self-management and self-corrections. In other words, knowing what needs to be done and doing it with personal conviction.

The DELTA Leadership Academy was established at the Broken Arrow campus in September 2005. To date, 47 students have graduated from the program, with 30 currently enrolled for the 2007-2008 academic year.

DELTA equips students with tools necessary to meet the challenges of employers, said Mahan. Personal leadership involves a personal relationship with yourself, an in-depth look at who you are inside and the mechanics of your emotions. DELTAs basis for this concept is simple: Moral courage, self-management and self-correction through adherence to the five DELTA core values established by the program.

The five core values of DELTA are discipline, excellence, legacy, trustworthiness and ambassadorship.

Mahan will also be presenting information on the DELTA Leadership Academy at the 6th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education on Jan. 5-8, 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
