Science and Technology Seminar Series discusses biofuels

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Biofuels will be in the spotlight on Oct. 12 at Northeastern State University. This fuel type will be highlighted as part of the fall 2011 Science and Technology Seminar Series.

The seminar is in the Science building, Room 160, at 3 p.m. in Tahlequah. Admission is free and open to the public.

Speaking is Lauren Woods of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Arkansas, on the topic Biofuel Production from Algal Feedstocks: an Engineering Approach.

Woods will discuss the potential use of algae as a significantly eco-friendly biofuel source because of its ability to use atmospheric carbon dioxide as a carbon source, and to clean nitrates and phosphorous from waste water. She will also talk about identification of ideal algal communities by isolating DNA from water samples. The DNA samples can be characterized through a technique called single-strand conformational polymorphism analysis, targeting a particular gene.
