Block Party, Movie Night open NSU's homecoming week

Published: 2011-10-10

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Northeastern State Universitys homecoming celebration, Truth, Justice and the Northeastern Way, features fun-filled weeknight activities during the celebration Oct. 9-15.

Three events that will be crowd-pleasers are Mondays BancFirst Block Party from 6-8 p.m. at Second Century Square, Tuesdays Movie Night by the Northeastern Activities Board at Norris Park at 7 p.m. and Thursdays Bon Fire and Spirit Rally from 7:30-9 p.m. at Beta Field.

The BancFirst Block Party celebrates homecoming with festivities including a chili cook-off, superhero costume contests for children and students, music and free food. Also attending is Carnival Epsilon, a group which performs superhuman feats.

The BancFirst Block Party is a great way for the campus community and alumni to visit, said Kathleen Kennedy, director of student involvement. The Block Party has an exciting carnival-like atmosphere and offers activities for the entire family.

The event replaces the Street Party which was held annually in downtown Tahlequah.

An inaugural homecoming activity for 2011 is Movie Night, hosted by the Northeastern Activities Board.

We will be screening Transformers: Dark of the Moon on an inflatable movie screen, Kennedy said. Admission is free and the public is welcome, so everyone can bring lawn chairs and blankets and snacks and settle in for a night at the movies with a drive-in atmosphere.

Thursdays big event is the Bon Fire and Spririt Rally, which will include a Hawk Dog-eating contest and a DJ. The traditional gathering is the build-up of school spirit in preparation for the homecoming football game.

Homecoming week begins with Paint the Town Green on Muskogee Avenue and concludes with the football game at 2 p.m. against Harding at Doc Wadley Stadium, and womens soccer vs. Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at Dr. Dan F. DeLoache Field.

Also, NSU will present its annual awards to distinguished alumni. Former educator and lifelong volunteer Mary Battenfield (60) of Tulsa, actor-playwright Joe Sears (72) of Austin, Texas, and past educator and legislator Barbara Staggs (63) of Muskogee will each be honored as Distinguished Alumni. Country music star Carrie Underwood (06) will be recognized as Distinguished Young Alumna and former state attorney general Drew Edmondson (68) of Oklahoma City will receive the Presidents Award for Community Service.
