NSU schedules activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Published: 2011-10-10

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--To enhance understanding of breast cancer and the importance of early detection, Northeastern State University is hosting TV for Double Ds and Pack the House Pink this month.

TV for Double Ds is Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the W. Roger Webb Educational Technology Center. It is open to NSU students, faculty and staff. The game show-style contest will use a format similar to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Grand prize is a new flatscreen television.

Other prizes will be awarded such as T-shirts, said Winona Johnson, event organizer. There will be a breast health information booth in the lobby and those attending will be assigned clickers. The clickers will be used during the audience surveys.

Attendees will first hear a short presentation from the Cherokee Nation Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program and hear from a breast cancer survivor. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

All questions during the contest will be derived from the survivors lecture, the presentation and information offered from the lobby booth, Johnson said.

This year proceeds from Pack the House Pink will support the new Survivors 2 Scholars scholarship established in December 2010 by the NSU Foundation. Funds will be used to grow the endowment.

Once mature, the endowment will support annually one male and one female student whose lives have been affected by cancer, Moore said. The student could be a cancer survivor, or have an immediate family member who survived or was a victim of cancer.

Pack the House Pink is in conjunction with the NSU-Southwestern football game at 2 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Doc Wadley Stadium. The event starts before the game with tailgating at noon in the north parking lot adjacent to the stadium. The first 30 tailgate cooks will receive pink aprons.

We will be giving pink polo shirts to the coaching staff and asking the players to wear pink tape and laces, said Penny Moore, director of annual giving and NSU Student Foundation adviser. We want to see everyone in the stadium wearing pink.

Pack the House Pink T-shirts are available for $10 at the RiverHawk Shoppes on the Tahlequah and Broken Arrow campuses. Supporters are asked to wear the shirts to the Oct. 29 game.

Moore said participation in Pack the House Pink does more than support a good cause.

This will also help students on campus, she said. Of course we stand behind anything that combats this disease, but supporting students is what our university is all about.

The TV for Double Ds event is sponsored by the NSU Office of Student Affairs, the Residence Halls Association and the National Indian Womens Health and Resource Center. Pack the House Pink is organized by the NSU Student Foundation.
