Constitution Day activities under way at NSU

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. United States Constitution, preamble.

These famous words set the framework for the organization of the United States government and are just as relevant today as when they were adopted on September 17, 1787.

To this end, Northeastern State University is observing Constitution Day with activities this week organized by the Office of Student Affairs in conjunction with the American Democracy Project and Campus Compact.

A Democracy Wall will be in the University Center basement in Tahlequah and on tables in each building at NSU-Broken Arrow. Students may visit and write comments to selected questions. Tables will be covered with butcher paper and crayons will be provided for writing.

Future plans include placing a permanent Democracy Wall in the new multipurpose area in the University Center basement, said Barbara Fuller, instructor of educational foundations and leadership. The Office of Student Affairs will also participate in the Be the Change dinner and discussion Tuesday and we will hand out pocket Constitutions.

NSU will also participate in a voter registration competition with other Oklahoma institutions. The goal is to get the greatest number of college students on the voter registration rolls. New registrations can be counted if registering for the first time or in a new precinct or if changing party affiliation. Voter registration forms will be available daily on the second floor of the University Center in Tahlequah from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. and at the Democracy Wall tables at NSUBA.

If a student hasnt registered to vote, this is the perfect time, Fuller said. And it is the perfect time to make their voices heard on the Democracy Wall.
