(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Musical talents of students and the community will be on display Oct. 4 at a special concert titled Dances of Wind and Song.
Two faculty members at Northeastern State University are teaming to produce this blend of the NSU Wind Ensemble and the University/Community Chorus and University Singers.
Dances of Wind and Song is set for Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Sen. Herb Rozell Ballroom of the University Center in Tahlequah. Conducting are Dr. Norman Wika, director of bands, and Vaughn Roste, director of choral activities. Admission is free and open to the public.
Wika said reasons are numerous to have NSUs ensembles give joint performances.
In the music departments typical whirlwind of activity, faculty and students can get wrapped up in our own projects and become isolated from all the great music being made around us, Wika said. By combining these groups into a single performance all the students get a chance to hear each other. It also allows us to combine our audiences and expose people to wonderful music they might not hear otherwise.
The concert will feature works by an array of composers including Franz Schubert, George Frederick Handel, Gary Hallquist, Kirby Shaw, Gilbert and Sullivan, Martin Ellerby, Rob Smith, Hans Leo Hassler, Daniel J. Hall, Giles Farnaby, PDQ Bach, Robert Russell Bennett and Arturo Marquez.
This will be a great family event, Roste said. we've chosen some catchy music ranging from 500 years old to modern pieces. These ensembles are composed of some wonderfully talented singers and players. Is there a better show in town for free?
