2011 Emerald Ball set for Dec. 10

Published: 2011-12-01

Five Distinguished Alumni will be honored at the 14th annual Emerald Ball at Northeastern State University.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 in the University Center Sen. Herb Rozell Ballroom on the Tahlequah campus. The Emerald Ball is produced by the NSU Alumni Association.

This is the highlight of the Alumni Associations holiday season, said Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services. We look forward to the Emerald Ball each year as the formal recognition of our outstanding alumni honorees. We are really excited about those we are honoring this year.

Selected by the Alumni Associations Board of Directors, the Distinguished Alumni are Mary Battenfield, Joe Sears and Dr. Barbara Staggs, and the honoree for Outstanding Young Alumna is Carrie Underwood. Former state attorney general Drew Edmondson is the honoree for the Presidents Award for Community Service.

Officially, this is a black-tie-optional affair, though calling it green-tie-optional might be more appropriate for a Northeastern event, Johnson said. When the doors open at 6:30, guests will have a chance to mix and mingle and sit down with their meal.

The formal program begins at 7 p.m. with the formal recognition of the honorees. NSU and the Alumni Association will also recognize others who have made important contributions. A Price is Right-style game will be held where participants can win prizes, including an emerald and diamond pendant donated by Meigs Jewelers. Dancing follows with music by the live band Annie Up.

Tickets are $75 for Alumni Association members and $90 for non-members. The event is open to the public.

Corporations and organizations may purchase corporate tables for $1,500. Half the price is tax-deductable as a charitable donation to the Alumni Association and its outreach efforts.

The Alumni Association invites the community to participate in an evening of fine dining and dancing, Johnson said. We want everyone to help us celebrate the wonderful accomplishments and contributions of our five alumni honorees for 2011.

Tickets may be purchased online on the Alumni Association web site or by calling the Office of Alumni Services at 918-458-2143.
