Published: 2011-11-21

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--In what has become a traditional celebration, Northeastern State Universitys Seminary Hall will soon light up the holiday season. And a new tradition will also be established ice skating in Norris Park.

Lights On Seminary Hall is Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. on campus in front of NSUs signature building. The decorative lights will be turned on at 7 p.m.

Dr. Martin Tadlock, NSU interim president, will offer the welcome for Lights On Seminary Hall. His wife LaRae and Tahlequah mayor Jason Nichols will host the ceremony.

Through the Lights On ceremony NSU has the opportunity to support the Tahlequah: City of Firsts initiative and officially kick off the holiday season, said Dr. Robyn Pursley, NSU theatre coordinator and organizer of the event. "This year the lighting ceremonies coincide with a special NSU night at the winter attraction Snowflake a temporary ice rink in Norris Park sponsored by the city. We are excited about the Snowflake venture and will be using a snowflake theme in the lighting ceremony to show our support.

The Tahlequah High School Show Choir, the Tahlequah Ballet Company and the second-grade class of Tahlequah Public Schools will attend to perform holiday favorites.

We are so pleased to offer a platform for local youngsters and NSU students to showcase their talents at this event, Pursley said.

Near the ceremonys end, Santa will arrive. Children can have a free picture taken with him.

Santas elves will be in attendance and Mrs. Claus will read Twas the Night Before Christmas. Children will receive a commemorative ornament from Santas tree and a treat bag from Santas stocking. Children are also invited to personally deliver Christmas letters to Santas magical mailbox.

This is the fourth year that I have had the wonderful opportunity to organize Lights On, Pursley said. I love the fact that this event brings the Tahlequah and NSU communities together on our gorgeous campus to celebrate the holidays before we all part ways for the winter break.

Parents are asked to bring a camera to take a picture of their children with Santa. Limited quantities of instant pictures are available for those without a camera.

The Lights On Seminary Hall ceremony kicks off the holiday season. The next holiday event is the Tahlequah Christmas Parade of Lights.

The parade is at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 9. Businesses, schools, churches and other groups from Tahlequah will display elaborately decorated floats. Bands and classic cars will also be in the procession. The parade route is from NSU through downtown on Muskogee Avenue. This years theme is The Songs of Christmas.
