(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Anyone with a sweet tooth will want to attend the Northeastern State University Opera Workshop Fundraising Gala. Proceeds will support the upcoming spring production of The Pirates of Penzance.
The fundraiser and performance is Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the NSU Jazz Lab and admission is $7, or $5 with a student ID. Price includes the concert, dessert and coffee or tea. Dessert raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the door. Proceeds from the gala go toward prop purchases and facility and costume rental.
The treats will be prepared by friends, faculty and students of the NSU Department of Music and raffled to the highest bidder. Participants will also be treated that night to a performance of popular songs.
So many people are helping us make this fundraiser a success and we have already raised $700, said Dr. Shannon Unger, assistant professor of music. We are particularly grateful to Medearis Law Firm and to the faculty and community members donating their time, talent and desserts. We also thank those who have already contributed to the production through donations or by purchasing tickets to the gala.
The concert repertoire will include popular songs from The Pirates of Penzance, Spamalot and Guys and Dolls and music by Sondheim, Bernstein, Donizetti and Bizet.
It will be an eclectic program of songs that we really love to sing and we look forward to seeing everyone there, Unger said.
NSU students are invited to audition for The Pirates of Penzance on Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. in Room 301 of Fine Arts. NSU Opera Workshop will put on the classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta at the Tahlequah Armory Municipal Auditorium on April 27-28, 2012. Dr. Norman Wika, NSU director of bands and assistant professor of music, will arrange the music and conduct.
Donations to the Opera Workshop are tax deductible and can be made through the NSU Foundation. Donors will be acknowledged in all NSU music department programs. For more information about NSU Opera Workshop and the fundraiser contact Unger at 918-444-2721.
