NSU participating in Veterans Day Roll Call

Published: 2011-11-08

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Volunteers are needed to help honor the recent fallen heroes during Veterans Day ceremonies on Nov. 11 at Northeastern State University.

Following the 10th anniversary of the September 11 tragedy, NSU has joined a nationwide grass-roots effort to honor American service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan during the decade.

Campus and community volunteers at NSU and more than 100 colleges and universities across the nation will read the names of the 6,200-plus casualties of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Major Jason Junkens, ROTC director, is organizing NSUs participation and invited volunteers to read names.

We are still in need of about 23 people to read names between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., he said. We are asking these volunteers to read during 10-minute time slots. We are willing to take volunteers on site, but of course we would be more comfortable with people already committed to assigned times.

The ceremony is at Second Century Square and begins at 5:45 a.m. with the posting of colors, the national anthem, a Native American presentation and opening remarks from Dr. Martin Tadlock, NSU interim president. The reading of names concludes around 4 p.m. At 1 p.m. a moment of silence and flag raising will be held outside the Administration building.
