Finney receives $100 Carter scholarship

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Emily Finney, a Muskogee senior majoring in elementary education, was named the recipient of the $100 Bertie Carter Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was established by Dr. Karen Carey, associate professor of educational foundation leadership at NSU and daughter of the late Bertie Carter. It assists College of Education students who are traveling abroad for international learning experiences.

"I will use the scholarship for meals, museum and tourist fees while I am completing my pre-internship II requirement at the Vienna International School in Austria," said Finney, a member of NSU's Honors Program. "I know that my growth as a professional educator in Vienna will benefit my future students and my community. I thank NSU and Dr. Carey for this opportunity, and my family for their support."

Bertie Carter earned a bachelor's degree in 1964 and master's in home economics in 1966 from Northeastern State University. She began her teaching career at Union Public Schools before joining Tahlequah Public Schools. She also worked part-time in the NSU College of Education mentoring first-year teachers. Carter was a recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Tahlequah branch of the American Association of University Women, where she served a term as president. She was also active in the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Tahlequah Hospital Foundation Board of Directors.
