NSU gains approval to build multipurpose event facility

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Following approval by the regents of the Regional University System of Oklahoma, plans are now in motion for Northeastern State University to construct a $14.4 million multipurpose event center.

The still-unnamed facility will stand on the northwest corner of North Street and North Grand Avenue between the NSU Oklahoma College of Optometry and Doc Wadley Stadium.

"The building space has been designed to ensure an optimum experience for audiences and our students," said NSU President Steve Turner. "Spaces for entrance and exit are open and inviting and seating is spacious. Plans call for maximizing space between seating and walkways and the audio and visual systems will substantially enhance event delivery. Interior schemes will reflect the spirit and pride of the RiverHawks."

Jerry Cook, interim vice president for university relations, said the facility is designed to serve NSU, Tahlequah and the region.

"Through our existing facilities, NSU has helped so many local and regional fairs, expos, seminars and forums to grow," he said. "This new arena will allow more expanded programs and new events to be presented in Tahlequah."

The 14-month construction begins in late April. Anticipated opening date is Aug. 1, 2013. Architect of record is Crafton Tull. Building expenses will be paid through previously approved bond funds, dedicated university capital funds, fee revenue above debt service and interest earnings.

Tony Duckworth, director of athletics, said the facility's scale fits NSU's enrollment, location and NCAA Division II affiliation.

"The multipurpose event center is another positive step in the life of NSU athletics," he said. "This facility will greatly enhance the student-athlete experience while providing RiverHawks fans an outstanding venue to watch NCAA Division II basketball competition."

The new event center will offer a level of flexibility and seating options not found at other regional venues.

The building will house more than 78,000 square feet. The floor plan calls for 69 rooms including six locker rooms. Amenities will also include a video screening room, an athletics shop, a suite of offices for coaches and staff, concession areas, laundry facilities, a ticket office and a room for the athletic and alumni associations.

"We are proud of our students and our student athletes," Duckworth said. "We are excited to provide a facility that highlights the leadership and sportsmanship of our talented students. We look forward to watching our students excel in this new facility."

Permanent seating capacity will be about 3,000. However, configurations using floor and mezzanine space will permit the seating of additional people.

"Thanks to the Board of Regents for the University System of Oklahoma for their support and to all those at NSU who have worked tirelessly to make this facility possible," Turner said. "It will serve NSU well for decades to come."

More information will follow as the project progresses.
