NSU's Galaxy of Stars returns to NSU CPA Feb. 11

Published: 2012-02-01

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Freddy Cole Quartet will open the 26th annual Galaxy of Stars Series this year.

Returning to the Northeastern State University Center for the Performing Arts, the Galaxy of Stars series hosts the Freddy Cole Quartet on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. This series is presented by the Sequoyah Institute at NSU.

We are very pleased to be returning to the NSU CPA with the remainder of our 2012-13 season, said Amber Cowan, director of the Galaxy of Stars Series.

Cole first earned wide acclaim during the 1990s but his recording career spans 60 years. His earliest releases were in 1952 and 1953 with The Jokes On Me and Whispering Grass, respectively. A skilled vocalist and pianist, his 2010 release Freddy Cole Sings Mr. B received a Grammy nomination in 2011 in the Best Vocal Jazz category. His older siblings include musicians Eddie, Ike and Nat King Cole.

After releasing Whispering Grass, Cole traveled with Johnny Coles and Benny Golson, performing as the Earl Bostic Band. He has also worked with Grover Washington Jr. and is a member of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.

Cole studied at the Juilliard School of Music and holds a masters degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. Musical influences he cites include Billy Eckstine, John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson.

Freddy is a very seasoned artist. He comes from an extraordinarily talented family and his jazz vocals are unbelievable, said Cowan. We are looking forward to hearing him share his stories, experience and advice at the master class.

Keep on Swingin, a discussion and Q&A will be delivered by Cole at 6 p.m. in the NSU CPA. He will discuss the business of jazz music and the need for concentration and practice to succeed as an artist. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Individual ticket prices for the concert are $20 for adults, $18 for NSU alumni, $16 for NSU employees and seniors 60 and over, $10 for students and $6 for NSU students. To reserve tickets call 918-458-2075. For more information visit the Seqouyah Institute website.
