National History Day contest...repeats itself at NSU

Published: 2012-02-08

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Students from throughout District 8 will make their way to Northeastern State University to compete in the National History Day contest.

An all-day event, NSUs National History Day contest is April 3 on the second floor of the University Center. High school and middle school students may enter the district competition in two divisions. The Junior Division is for grades 6-8 and the Senior Division for grades 9-12. Deadline for registration is March 2 and there is an entry fee of $3.

This years contest theme is Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History. Students can choose topics and research their entries using primary and secondary sources. Findings can be presented as a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary or Web site.

NSU has hosted our district National History Day contest since the early 1980s, said Randall Wagnon, NSU history instructor. We want to encourage students to learn more about history and give them an opportunity to participate in a hands-on history experience.

Contest entries are not required for admission. Teachers and students may attend for free.

If teachers in the area wish to bring their classes, they are welcome to visit campus and see the contest, Wagnon said.

Judges will include NSU history instructors, teachers and former teachers and members of the community. Winners will compete in the state National History Day State Contest on May 2-3 at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City.

Students who enter the contest employ and integrate study methods and develop their reading skills, Wagnon said. By carrying out research, they have an opportunity to question, explore and think critically.
