NSU Alumni Association awards 2012-13 Legacy Scholarships

Published: 2012-08-01

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Three freshmen at Northeastern State University are recipients of the 2012-13 Legacy Scholarships, awarded through the Alumni Association.

Receiving scholarships for $1,500 are Stephen Morrison of Fort Gibson, Joshua Fleak of Tulsa and Colin Forehand of Claremore.

The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen with family who attended NSU in the past. Applications are reviewed by a committee drawn from the Alumni Association's board of directors. The committee determines the number of scholarships, the amounts to award and the recipients.

Morrison is a graduate of Fort Gibson High School and will begin classes at NSU when the fall term begins August 15. At FGHS he served as president and vice president of the Spanish Club and as a section leader for the marching/concert band, and was a member of the National Honor Society. His mother Karen (Willman) Morrison is a 1984 graduate of NSU, earning a bachelor's degree in business education. She is a member of the NSU Alumni Association.

"I am looking forward with great anticipation to beginning my college education at NSU," Morrison wrote to the Alumni Association. "I want to take opportunities to become involved in school activities and other social experiences at NSU."

Fleak graduated from Sapulpa High School and will join the NSU football team. In high school he was a member of Future Farmers of America and he served as a volunteer for the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce and Sapulpa Main Street. His father Jon, an Alumni Association member, attended NSU in the early 1980s and Joshua's aunt, Kristi Olzawski, graduated in 1992 with a degree in criminal justice.

"When I get to Tahlequah in August, I hope that I can have the same great experiences that my dad and aunt had during the time they spent at NSU," Fleak wrote. "I do not know what discipline I plan to study yet, but NSU offers some great choices."

Forehand is a graduate of Sequoyah High School in Claremore and plans to major in education at NSU. At Sequoyah his activities included membership in the Future Civic and Community Leaders of America, the Business Professionals of America and the high school chorus. His mother Lisa (Maxey) Forehand is an Alumni Association member and earned a bachelor's degree in business education in 1985 from NSU. Colin's grandmother Donna (Young) Maxey was awarded a bachelor's degree in business education in 1956. His great-grandmother graduated from Northeastern in 1949.

"I come from a family that knows the meaning of hard work and desires to help others," Forehand wrote. "I feel led to NSU because of its outstanding academic reputation and the success my family members have had as a result of their educations at NSU."

Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services, said the Legacy Scholarships are possible through the generosity of Alumni Association members.

"The members help the Legacy Scholarship endowment to grow," he said. "The Alumni Association board of directors is always excited to offer these scholarships to the children of our alumni."
