(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Sergeant First Class Billy Burrus will receive the Purple Heart in a special ceremony at Northeastern State University Wednesday, Jan. 25.
The ceremony will be held at the University Center in the Sen. Herb Rozell Ballroom at 11 a.m. Burrus is currently serving as a ROTC instructor at NSU. He will be receiving this medal for wounds suffered in Iraq in 2009.
Sergeant Burrus is a very professional NCO who is well deserving of this award, Major Jason Junkens said. This is a testament to the sacrifices he made and continues to make for his country.
Brigade Commander Colonel Bridget Rourke will be presenting the medal at the ceremony.
The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces who have been wounded in action. Normally, this award is bestowed in the field. However, this will be the first time a Purple Heart was awarded on the NSU campus.
These awards are typically awarded overseas in combat, Major Junkens said. It is unfortunate that he will not receive this in front of his men. But it is unique that he will be able to experience this with his family.
