NSU Science and Technology Seminar begins Sept. 5

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Through its Department of Natural Sciences, Northeastern State University has announced the lineup of speakers for its fall 2012 Science and Technology Seminar Series.The series is arranged by Dr. John de Banzie, professor of biology.

Through the seminar series, NSU students hear from scientists who are at the forefront of research in their respective fields," de Banzie said. "They explain their work, from formulating hypotheses to methodologies to findings."

The series begins Sept. 5 and continues every other Wednesday. Each seminar starts at 3 p.m. in the Science building, Room 160. Admission is free.

The series schedule, topics and speakers:

• Sept. 5 Targeting Cancer Stem Cell Traits for the Treatment of Hepatitis C Virus and Liver Cancer. Dr. Naushad Ali, Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
• Sept. 19 Hormone Regulation of Rewiring in the Fly Brain. Dr. Randall Hewes, Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma.
• Oct. 3 A Biodiversity Hotspot: Novel Phylogenetic, Genomic and Metabolic Diversities Within Zodletone Spring in Southwestern Oklahoma. Dr. Mustafa Elshahed, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Oklahoma State University.
• Oct. 17 Characterization of Biofilm Detachment Mechanisms. Dr. Wen Zhang, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Arkansas.
• Oct. 31 Multiple Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria: the Problem and Search for Solutions. Dr. Helen Zgurskaya, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Oklahoma.
• Nov. 14 Nano-Size Particles and Lipid Membranes: What Can We Learn from Computer Modeling? Dr. Alberto Striolo, Department of Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering, University of Oklahoma.

Speakers for the seminars are suggested by members of the NSU faculty.

"I stress that the seminar series is not just for science majors," de Banzie said. "It is open to all students and the public. We invite the campus and Tahlequah communities to attend."
