New home for Student Academic Success Center

Published: 2012-10-12

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Members of the Northeastern State University community visited the lobby of the John Vaughan Library on Oct. 11 to celebrate the establishment of a permanent home for the Student Academic Success Center (SASC).

Speakers at the opening included NSU President Steve Turner, Provost Bill Rugg and Jerrid Freeman, SASC director.

"Many, perhaps most, students are not aware of all the services we offer," Freeman said. "Having this center will allow us to enhance understanding of all the ways we can help students succeed during their years at NSU."

The SASC enhances the academic performance of students. It's stated mission is "to create an environment where each individual student is positively embraced and develops the connections necessary to thrive in the college community and in life following graduation."

Available to all students, the SASC serves as an information, referral and follow-up nexus for all other academic and co-curricular service operations. By offering such services to students, the SASC works to increase retention and graduation rates.

"Everyone has been informed of our need to impact retention and recruitment," Turner said. "In our 14-county area the student population isn't expected to increase for 10 years. To maintain an institution that grows, thrives and plans effectively for the long term, we must enhance retention."

Rugg also stressed the importance of keeping students on campus by helping them to succeed.

"Academic quality and student success are measured by retention," he said. "Retention is the job of everybody on campus. A center like this one will help all of us retain students. This is a one-stop shop to advise and help students with decisions virtually any question they may have."
