President Turner leads Northeastern into new year, new paradigm

Published: 2012-01-18

Just days into his new job, Dr. Steve Turner, president of Northeastern State University, discussed his vision for the future and praised regional universities during the spring 2012 opening meeting.

Were entering a new paradigm in 2012 that requires new partnerships, he said. I don't understand why were in a situation where were asking whether higher education is an individual gain or a public good. I wouldnt be standing here today without an education from a regional institution in Oklahoma.

Turner said those receiving college degrees, especially from regional universities, were moving Oklahoma forward.

NSU is improving the quality of life in northeastern Oklahoma, he said Higher education is clearly both a public good and an individual gain. Our students stay in our state and make a difference.

During his address, Turner discussed a list of preliminary goals for his presidency, including comprehensive planning between campus entities, upgrading student housing, appointing a diversity coordinator and identifying the best methods to offer online instruction.

There is a school of thought in the training of presidents that the first 100 days are critical, Turner said. I do believe that is when relationships are established and we get a sense of each other. But Im more interested in where NSU is in 25 or 50 years, not just the first 100 days. I want to work here for a long time and be effective.

A looming priority for NSU and its new president is the upcoming visit by the Higher Learning Commission. Turner encouraged faculty and staff to tell the NSU story to commission members.

Sometimes we get caught up in our challenges and we don't tell the positive story, he said. Be that positive ambassador for everything that is happening at NSU. You don't have to brag, but if its a fact you ought to share it with these folks.

Dr. Steve Turner was named the 19th president of Northeastern State University by the Regional University System of Oklahoma Board of Regents. He assumed the presidency on Jan. 1, 2012.

Prior to his NSU appointment, Turner served as Vice President for Administration and Finance and Executive Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations and Economic Development at East Central University.

He began his career in higher education in 1989 at ECU and for the last 22 years Turner has served in many capacities, including campus police officer, tenured professor, and Chair of the Department of Human Resources.

Turner earned his doctorate in Adult Learning and Higher Education Administration from the University of Oklahoma. He holds a masters degree in Human Resources with an emphasis in Counseling, and his bachelors degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Law Enforcement and Minor in Counseling, both from East Central University.
