NSU embarks on summer construction projects

Published: 2012-06-26

During the summer 2012 term, Northeastern State University is engaged in a series of construction projects to enhance campus life, including a cafeteria remodeling, resurfacing of Dr. Dan F. DeLoache Field and construction of parking lots.

Construction is completed and an August 1 opening date is anticipated for the Cappitola Cappi Wadley Center for Reading and Technology on the third floor of Bagley Hall.

Renovations of the Market Cafe dining venue in the University Center are under way. A portion of the cafeteria is walled off to accommodate construction, which began May 14. Lewis Avenue is closed at the University Center until August 1.

"The functionality of the Market Cafe will not be affected," said Todd Enlow, interim director of auxiliary services. "We estimate the loss of only 30 seats during the renovation and all regular summer serving stations will be open."

The remodeling includes replacing the central beverage station with two stations on the east and west walls, addition of two kitchen venues and addition of 92 seats by enclosing the existing north patio and another 104 seats by constructing a new exterior patio.

DeLoache Field is receiving a new surface of patriot bermuda grass on its playing and practice fields.

"Patriot is the finest natural grass surface for athletics venues in this region of the country," said Tony Duckworth, director of athletics. "We were in need of a more player-friendly surface that will provide consistency during intercollegiate competition. Adding a quality surface to the practice area will allow our competition field additional recovery time between matches."

New parking lots will be constructed north of Crafton Street across from Rousey Field and northeast of the Leoser Complex. The lot south of Leoser will receive some asphalt patching and be reconfigured to permit 40 new parking spaces.

"We are attempting to maximize the space and use it in the most efficient manner," said Jon Asbill, interim director of capital projects and planning. "These projects will provide more parking spaces and enhance safety for students as they walk between residences, classes and their vehicles."

The 40,000 square-foot Crafton lot will occupy an undeveloped area west of NSU's intramural fields. The 16,000 square-foot northeast Leoser lot will replace an area of small lawns, sidewalks and limited parking west of Rousey Field.

The northeast Leoser contruction will create an additional 30 parking spaces and the Crafton lot will add another 100. The Crafton parking area will also include four light poles for security and two sidewalks.
