NSU professor Dovel to teach at trumpet workshop in Greece

Published: 2012-08-21

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Assistant professor of music at Northeastern State University, Dr. Jason Dovel, will be teaching in Greece as part of the Exploring Brass Workshop in January 2013.

Dovel will leave Jan. 2 for the seven-day festival is in Kalavrita.

"I have participated in many trumpet festivals, including our own annual festival here at NSU, but never in Europe," Dovel said. "Having spoken to students and faculty who have attended Exploring Brass in Greece in the past, I know it will be an extraordinary experience."

Dovel will offer instruction with internationally acclaimed brass faculty, including Gerassimos Ioannidis of Orpheus Conservatory in Athens, David Hickman of Arizona State University and Vince DiMartino of Centre College in Kentucky.

DiMartino, who was a featured guest artist of the NSU Trumpet Festival in 2009 and 2012, invited Dovel to the workshop.

"DiMartino is a former president of the International Trumpet Guild and an outstanding player," Dovel said. "Because he has performed at the trumpet festival and Jam-Balaya we have developed a great working relationship, and he asked if I would like to take part in Exploring Brass."

As an instructor, Dovel will coach daily rehearsals, present master classes and perform with festival faculty and students. One master class Dovel will lead is "Baroque Trumpet and Historically Informed Performance Practice."

"There aren't many people who play Baroque trumpet, so maybe I can bring something unique to the workshop," he said.

Dovel has asked NSU students to accompany him to Greece to participate in the festival. In addition to musical study with renowned faculty, students will have opportunities to visit the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, the Plaka shopping area, Syntagma Square and the changing of the guards at the Hellenic Parliament. Sightseeing outside Athens will include Ancient Olympia, the Theatre at Epidarus and other sites in the Peloponnese.

"This is certainly a great opportunity for NSU and our music students," Dovel said. "Fall classes have just begun, but I already have some student commitments and I hope to get more."

Students planning to take the trip include seniors Timothy Moore of Grove and Daniel Van Duyne of Wagoner, juniors Austin Stunkard of Coweta, Jared Wallis of Talala and Dylan Peters of Wagoner and freshmen Tracy DeWitt of Panama and Joshua Shoemaker of Sapulpa.
