Campus concert to feature NSU's Surman, visiting faculty

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Dr. Patricia Surman, an teacher of flute at Northeastern State University, will perform a concert with visiting faculty on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the NSU Center for the Performing Arts.

Appearing with Surman are Dr. Jun Qian, assistant professor of clarinet at Baylor University, and Nataliya Sukhina, collaborative pianist at Texas Tech University. The concert is free and open to the public.

I am very pleased to present this concert to the NSU campus and community," Surman said. It will be an enjoyable program for musicians and non-musicians alike, and it is very exciting to be able to bring musicians of this caliber to our stage. It is not an event to be missed!

The program American works for flute and piano by Lowell Liebermann and Eldin Burton, works for clarinet and piano by Giacomo Rossini, Leonard Bernstein and Yaochi, and concludes with Libby Larsens Barn Dances for flute, clarinet and piano.

Additionally,Qian will present a clarinet masterclass on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. in Room 301 of Fine Arts.

In addition to teaching at NSU, Surman is an instructor of flute at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She holds degrees from the University of Redlands and the University of North Texas, where she studied with world-renowned flutist and pedagogue Mary Karen Clardy. Surman plays regularly with the Tulsa Symphony, Tulsa Opera Orchestra and Starlight Band. She has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad,and is making advances in the field of flute and computer music as a member of the ensemble DuoInteraktiv.

Qian is a member of the Waco (Texas) Symphony. He has held teaching positions at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, New York State University and the Eastman School of Music. He has also performed throughout China and has been a featured soloist with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic. Dr. Qian is working on a CD project, East Meets West, with the Minnesota Public Radio Station. The CD features music for clarinet and piano by well-known Chinese composers. Qian earned his undergraduate degree in music from Baylor University and his doctoral degree from the Eastman School of Music.

Sukhina is a collaborative pianist at Texas Tech University. A Ukraine native, she graduated from the Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music in Kiev and the University of North Texas, where she studied under Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Vladimir Viardo. She has performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist across the U.S. and can be heard on the CD Facets 3: New American Works for Trumpet with trumpeter John Holt.
