Carte family earns inaugural Parent Program award

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- For the first time in Northeastern State University history, officials have selected a Family of the Year. This award was created by the NSU Parent Program and focuses on the fact that at NSU, students and their families are all participants in the students educational experience. Students who nominated their family addressed how their family members have been supportive of their success in college, their familys support and enthusiasm for NSU, community or civic engagement of the family and finally why their family should receive the honor.

The family chosen to hold the Family of the Year title for the 2013-14 academic year, is the Carte family of Westville, Okla. In a family where education is essential, support is evident and love is effortless; they were the obvious choice, says Suzanne Myers, Parent Program Coordinator.

The Cartes were nominated by 41-year-old freshman Margaret Carte and honored at the NSU Parent Program Family Weekend event in late September. Margaret noted her familys positive relational background, as well as their deep roots in not only education, but NSU, specifically.

The Cartes, which include Margarets husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, live together on their family farm. According to Margaret, the entire family was very supportive of her decision to attend college, and told her it would be the best decision she would ever make. The Carte family is comprised of several educators, all of which are graduates of NSUs College of Education, with bachelor degrees in Elementary Education.
