Science & Technology Seminar Series Begins Sept. 11

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The initial speaker for the Fall 2013 Science & Technology Seminar
Series, Sept. 11 is NSUs very own Dr. Joseph Ahlander who will be presenting his lecture
entitled Nutrition, Autophagy, and Cancer. This presentation will focus on two of
his research projects.
Ahlander is an Assistant Professor of Biology in the Department of Natural Sciences at the NSU-Tahlequah campus. He has his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona.
The focus of his research is to understand cancer biology utilizing the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system.
The first project he will be sharing, is about the recent advancements in understanding the function of Ard1, which is a gene that has been linked to numerous diseases found in humans, including cancer. The second projects focus is on the effects of diet and nutrition on cancer progression.
The Science and Technology Seminar Series is arranged by Dr. John de Banzie, professor of biology.
