TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State University student Katie Cariker, Jenks senior
and Psychology major currently has photographs on display on the second floor of the
John Vaughan Library at the NSU-Tahlequah campus. The Benefit Gallery for Haiti offers
both the exhibit itself and a reception. The exhibit can be viewed through Jan. 17
during the libraries hours of operation, and the reception is Jan. 13 from 6-8 p.m.;
both of which are on the second floor of the library. Admission to the reception is
free.
The photographs on display are those that Cariker took on a mission trip to Haiti in May 2013. She went on this mission trip with NSUs Campus Christian Fellowship (CCF). This group went to drill a well at one of the Haitian Impact Christian Ministries churches in the mountains to help provide safe water and further community development. The donations from the exhibit will benefit the HICM.
Cariker has become very involved with HICM since her travels in May. She was accepted as one of their interns and is further assisting the organization through her church in Glenpool, Okla. Haiti is considered one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, where the average yearly income is $100 and the social conditions are precarious. Predominant issues Haitians are faced with are disease, hunger and illiteracy.
Im very excited about this because Ive never had my work on display before, said Cariker. The night of the reception I will be there to take donations. I would love to send a big check to HICM.
The library is open from 8 a.m. 5 p.m. on Jan. 9 10 and will resume normal business hours once the semester begins on Monday, Jan. 13 (Monday Friday, 7:30 a.m. Midnight).
