Award-winning poet, novelist to present April 23

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Speaking at Northeastern State University on Wednesday, April 23 in the Webb Auditorium of the NSU-Tahlequah campus is award-winning poet and novelist Sherman Alexie. The presentation will be from 7:30-8:30 p.m., with a book signing to follow.

Alexie is an author, poet, and screenwriter who was named one of The New Yorkers 20 top writers for the 21st century. His writing tells tales of contemporary American Indian life laced with razor-sharp humor, unsettling candor and biting wit. His feature length movie Smoke Signals has become a classic.

The presentation is free and open to the general public. A live video broadcast will be shown at NSU-Broken Arrow for those unable to attend at the Tahlequah campus.

NSUs Project IM READY is sponsoring this event, with generous funding from The Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and additional funding by the NSU Indigenous Scholars Development Center and the Sequoyah Institute. The project director is Dr. Pam Louderback, director of the NSU Library in Broken Arrow.

Project IM READY aims to provide culturally diverse education and resources for Librarians working with Native American students in high poverty rural areas of Oklahoma. The grant also provides funding for events within the community to promote education, art and continued learning.
