CEL offers 39 summer camps

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State Universitys College of Extended Learning is offering 39 summer camps through its department of Continuing Education. These camps range in age for young children to young adults and range in duration from one to four days.

The curriculum for the camps is created by a plethora of entities; NSUs College of Liberal Arts, College of Education, Continuing Education, Tulsa Public Schools, Broken Arrow Public Schools, Cherokee Nation: Cherokee Arts Center and All About Learning.

I am so excited to have such a variety of opportunities this summer for young learners, says Rylee Ketcher, drector of Continuing Education.

NSUs Continuing Education is offering camps in four general areas of interest.

Arts and Crafts Camps include: Printmaking Camp, Kids Crafts, Kids Jewelry Making, General Art Camp, Creative Drawing, Imaginative Drawing, Still Life Painting for Beginners, Cartooning Basics, Illustration, Poster Design, and Piata Making.

Camps for youth who enjoy the outdoors include: Tennis Camp, Kayak Camp, Hiking and Biking, Summer Fun and Fitness, and Survivor Camp.

Future scientist and engineer camps include: Junior Science, CSI Camps, Robo Camps, and LEGO Camps.

Musical art and athletic camps include: Flute Workshop, Music and Art Exploration, Music and Art Around the World, and Junior Martial Arts.

The NSU athletic department is also offering camps in the following areas: baseball, girls basketball, soccer, and softball. These camps all focus on the fundamentals of each respective sport, along with team building, positive thinking and goal setting delivered in a friendly environment. 

Another option is the College Readiness Camp for incoming high school juniors and seniors. This camp is designed to orient students with the sometimes confusing process of preparing for entrance into college. This camp provides an opportunity for students to ask questions about processes, requirements, time frames and more. This is not an NSU-specific camp. The information shared here is designed to prepare students for application to any public institution of higher learning. From financial aid applications to general enrollment requirements; this camp will prove crucial for preparing for college, regardless of where the student wants to go.

NSUs College Readiness Camp is June 12-14 at the NSU-Tahlequah campus. Students will engage in ACT Prep Classes, take the ACT National Test, do a Q&A with university departments, and meet current NSU students.

Students who sign up for this camp must have already enrolled in the June national ACT test to be taken at the NSU-Tahlequah campus, if not then they need to understand that they will not be taking the test with the other campers on Saturday, June 14.

The cost of this camp is $253, which includes housing, meals and materials. This fee, however, does not include the cost of the ACT. Students must register for the National ACT Test at actstudent.org. Registration deadline is May 30.

All students under 18 years of age are required to submit a Medical Risk Waiver with their registration before the first day of camp. Account balances must be paid before the first day of camp.

We have almost doubled the amount of camp offerings from last year and have many new topics and activities we cant wait to share with the campers, Ketcher said. It is a special opportunity to be involved with young minds; everything is still so fresh and new. And if by being here for this short period of time they keep with them special memories of NSU, all the better.
