Earth Day events scheduled for April 22

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- On Tuesday, April 22, NSU will celebrate Earth Day 2014: Gather Here. Go Green. This event is a university wide program led by the Committee for Sustainability and the Northeastern Student Government Association.

This years Earth Day celebration will take place from 2-6 p.m. and will consist of fun and learning. There will be a sustainability workshop from 2-3 p.m. in the University Center, Ballroom C and that will be followed by fun in the sun in the Second Century Square with organizational tables, music and prizes.

Earth Day, considered by some as the birth of the modern environmental movement began in 1970. The first Earth Day celebration capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center.

Gaylord Nelson, Earth Day Founder and former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin conceptualized the idea after the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif. and on April 22, 1970, approximately 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies.

The creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts are all a direct result of the very first Earth Day.

Earth Day 2014 will focus on investing in efficiency and renewable energy as well as beginning to solve the climate crisis.

Northeastern State Universitys Committee for Sustainability focuses on promoting environmental awareness, resource conservation and sustainable practices to protect the future of the university and the surrounding communities.

Given NSUs history as a teaching college, it is imperative that we continue to teach the next generation to be good stewards of the environment, said Deb Hyde, NSU Committee for Sustainability Chair.
