TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The continued success of Northeastern State Universitys RiverHawk
Food Pantry shows that every little bit does help. The facility officially opened
its doors Sept. 9, 2013 on the Tahlequah campus. The pantry is open to all current
NSU students who can visit the pantry once a week to receive nutritional assistance
for themselves and any dependents.
Located in the basement of the University Center, the pantry measures 132 square feet and features six heavy duty shelving units that store an average of 10,000 plus pounds of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products.
The pantry has served 58 individual students to date, many of whom have returned for assistance. Many students who visit have dependents that they receive assistance for, bringing the total number of individuals directly aided by the RiverHawk Food Pantry to 118.
A secondary project of the pantry in 2013 was NSUs annual Food Basket Frenzy which provides a basket containing everything needed to prepare a full Thanksgiving meal. Last fall, the pantry provided 80 baskets to students and community members alike.
The RiverHawk Food Pantry continues its mission to provide nutritional assistance to NSU students this semester. In January, the pantry created a committee consisting of dedicated student volunteers. This student leadership has provided sustainability, enthusiasm and a greater opportunity for collaboration within the institution and amongst the community.
This success would not have been possible without the assistance of volunteers and donors. RiverHawk Food Pantry volunteers would like to thank the following organizations, companies and many individuals for their donations in 2013, including Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Northeastern Activities Board, Inter-Fraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, NSU Athletics Department, Auxiliary Services, Reasor's, Wal-Mart, Kimberly-Clark, Barnes and Noble and Georgia Pacific.
