Kappa Mu Epsilon initiates new members

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- The 2014 spring initiation for new members of the Oklahoma Alpha chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society at Northeastern State University, took place March 12. This initiation welcomed 12 new student members and one NSU faculty member.

The NSU students initiated were: Hudson Baab of Cleveland; Brooke Bratu and Tommy Gonzales of Fort Gibson; Jacob Cook and John Moore II of Grove; Michael Crockett and Whitney Dushane of Fairland; Karmyn Grigson of Lincoln, Ark.; Luther Langston of Tahlequah; Julia Markle of Pryor; Andrea Morgan of Coweta; and Haylee Phillips of Wilburton.

The NSU faculty member initiated was Dr. Demitri Plessas of Tahlequah.

Representing the NSU faculty at the spring 2014 initiation were: Dr. Joan Bell, Dr. John Diamantopoulos, Dr. Mark Buckles, Mrs. Peggy Hladik, Dr. Plessas and emeritus faculty, Dr. Larry Bell.

Kappa Mu Epsilon was founded in 1931 at NSU. It recognizes outstanding achievements in the study of mathematics at the undergraduate level. The organization has more than 150 chapters in 35 states. Since 1931, exactly 1,794 students and faculty members have been initiated into NSUs Oklahoma Alpha Chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon.

Dr. Joan Bell, professor of mathematics sponsors the Alpha chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon at NSU. The current officers of the chapter for the 2013-14 academic year are: JeAnna Philpot of Sallisaw, president; Caleb Stubbs of Muskogee, vice-president; Steven Sly of Wagoner, secretary; and James Townsend of Tahlequah, treasurer.
