RiverHawks ready for season play

Published: 2014-08-28

The Northeastern State football team opens its 2014 campaign on the road at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 against No. 9-ranked Pittsburg State.

The RiverHawks are looking to improve on a 2013 season in which they went 2-9 overall and finished with a 2-8 mark in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. NSU ended the season winning two of its final three games. The team enters the 2014 campaign under new leadership as Rob Robinson is set to begin his first season as head coach. The RiverHawks return eight offensive starters and nine starters from the defensive side of the ball.

The Northeastern State offense is projected to be led by sophomore quarterback Kevin Pantastico. This will be the Mesa, Arizona, natives first year as a member of the RiverHawks. He transferred from Phoenix College where he threw for 2,124 yards and 12 touchdowns, while tacking on 304 rushing yards in the 2013 season. Providing leadership on the offensive line will be junior center Ross Dvorak, who earned 2013 All-MIAA Honorable Mention Team honors on the field while also garnering Capital One Academic All-American honors in the classroom. Joining Dvorak on the line will be All-MIAA performer Ethan James and junior guard Trevon Lawson. The other two spots will be up for grabs.

The running backs will continue to be a strength of NSU. Senior All-MIAA running back Terrance Dixon returns to the RiverHawks looking to improve on a junior season in which he rushed for 720 yards and 10 touchdowns. Dixon will be joined in the backfield by junior running back Joel Rockmore who had 244 yards in two games before being injured last season. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a sophomore in 2012.

The receiving corps is projected to be led by junior Jordan Robinson and junior transfer Garrett Powell. Robinson made seven starts in the 2013 season and led the team with 264 yards. Powell sat out last year after transferring from Pittsburg State but is ready to make a difference this year for the RiverHawks.

Anchoring the defensive line will be nose tackle Kenley Choute. The senior leader finished the 2013 campaign with 21 tackles, which included four multi-tackle games. He will be joined on the line by All-MIAA performer Dakota Moran and fifth-year senior James Renfrow. Linebacker Jack Gray is scheduled to return after missing the 2013 season with a broken hand suffered in the preseason. The sixth-year Chandler, Oklahoma, native is expected to provide valuable senior leadership.

Sophomore Steffon Herd will join the secondary after tallying 14 receptions as a wide receiver in 2013. He will be joined by Jordan Cunningham who had nine tackles in three games. A trio of seniors will be at the corner position. Marcus Cotton returns to the secondary after registering four multi-tackle games in 2013, while Chandler Barr comes back after a season in which he posted three interceptions and 17 tackles. They will be joined by Romon Beard, a transfer from Emporia State University.

On special teams, Northeastern State returns their punter and kickoff man in senior Dylan Beers. The punt and kickoff return units will be up for grabs in the preseason.
