Women of Northeastern looking to expand membership base

Published: 2015-01-28

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Northeastern State University has been known for the pride its alumni base carries with it into the professional work, and recently, the Alumni Association has created a new group in hopes of reaching out to the alumnae base.

Women of Northeastern was established last year, with a soft launch during Homecoming 2014. The organization is open to alumnae who consider themselves supporters of Northeastern and are also members of the alumni association.

This group is an exclusive alumnae society providing NSU women opportunities to share talents, learn new skills and build lasting friendships. This society encourages and facilitates both professional and personal development, networking and mentoring opportunities for NSU's alumnae and current female students, said Barbara Abercrombie, President of the NSU Alumni Association.

The organization hopes to serve as a venue to help all generations of people at Northeastern to connect. Membership will be on an annual basis in addition to membership in the alumni association, and will be priced at $35/year for membership and $25/year for recent graduates (first three years after first NSU graduation).

In addition to networking events and meetings, professional development seminars and student enrichment opportunities; membership will also include invitations to exclusive Women of Northeastern events such as Champagne Bingo (free of charge), Ladies Tea, Empower Hour luncheons, and monthly happy hour.

We hope to expand on activities to encompass the needs of the membership, said Meggie Froman-Knight, Information & Special Events Coordinator for the office of Development & Alumni Relations. We are also working to plan a senior tea, where the Women of Northeastern meet with graduating seniors from each campus. This would allow graduates to have an eased entry into the Northeastern State Alumni network as well as network with those who are experts in their fields.

Women of Northeasterns first event, a happy hour, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar in Tulsa.

Whether an individual is a recent graduate, a retiree, staff, faculty, supporter or alumnus of Northeastern, if they have a passion for people of Northeastern succeeding while in school, initially after graduation or throughout their career, they are going to want to have the opportunity to be a part of this group, said Abercrombie.
