Founders Day 5K and 1K Fun Run commemorate NSU’s history

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--On Sat., Feb. 28, Northeastern State University will host the fifth annual Founders Day 5K and 1K Fun Run. The races will begin at the NSU Centennial Plaza on the Tahlequah campus.
The NSU Founders Day 5K is one of many events hosted on the NSU Tahlequah campus that commemorates the creation of Northeastern State Normal School and pays tribute to the foresight of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, which authorized building the male and female seminaries at Park Hill in 1846.
The entry fee for each of the races is $20 per person if registered prior toFeb. 12. However, day-of registration will also be available for $30. For those that pre-register, a free race t-shirt will be included.
The revenue from this race each year has supported student scholarships, Libby Rogers, director of Student Health at NSU, said. This year we havedecided to use the raised revenue to supportour students who are on the RISE scholarship. We are hoping tohave 600 plus runners this year.
The RiverHawks Initiating Service and Engagement (RISE) Scholarship Program is a service and community engagement program designed to maximize the service potential of new incoming students. The primary goals of the program are to create, maintain and grow service and community/civic engagement opportunities in the NSU community.
Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 28in the Continuing Education parking lot. The 1K Fun Run will begin at9 a.m., and the 5K is slated to start at9:30 a.m.
