Greek Sing raises more than $6k for BCM director

Published: 2015-05-14

(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- Northeastern State Universitys Greek community hosted its Sixth Annual Greek Sing on Saturday, April 11. The theme for this years Greek Sing was NSU Y2K, and teams composed of NSUs Greek organizations performed songs that were popular during the early 2000s.

This year Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Phi Lambda Chi teamed up, Delta Zeta, Pi Kappa Alpha and Phi Sigma Kappa partnered up, and Alpha Omicron Pi, Kappa Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon comprised the final team.

The beneficiary of this years event was Debbie Lipscomb, NSUs Baptist Collegiate Ministries director and an NSU Centurion. Lipscomb was recently diagnosed with cancer, and the proceeds will help to cover some of her medical expenses.

At final count, the event was able to raise $6,670 for Lipscomb.

Greek Sing was a success, and the focus on philanthropy is one of the main reasons I am a proud Greek alumna. It is also one of the main reasons I love Greek Sing at NSU, Helen Lahrman, coordinator of Greek Life and Community Engagement at NSU said.

The competition is nice, but watching everyone be sportsmen about the event because the purpose of the event is a philanthropic one, is truly a wonderful moment as a Fraternity/Sorority life professional.

This year, the team composed of Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Phi Lambda Chi took home the first place prize, basing their routine off of the hit movie, Bring It On.

The performance can be viewed on YouTube.

Matt Ozturk, student co-organizer for Greek Sing, said that he will remember the philanthropic component of the event over the entertainment.

Being able to invite Dr. Lipscomb on stage and hand her the check while the crowd was giving her a standing ovation and all of the Greek chapters were on stage cheering together. It was such a powerful moment, and I'm so thankful I was able to be a part of it, he said.

"Each chapter has their own national philanthropy, but by having this event where all the Greek chapters participate together, I feel that this forms a great sense of community unity. I believe that by participating in activities such as these, we learn what it truly means to give back.
